Healthy Skin from the Inside Out

Happy spring! Those of us in Philadelphia are welcoming spring with yet another snow storm. None the less, it is still spring and I am completely ready. Winter certainly takes a toll on our skin and many clients are asking me about holistic ways to repair and renew their skin after the cold, harsh winter weather.

First and foremost is diet. We are what we eat, no way around it. The skin is the largest organ on the body and it tells no lies. There are many wonderful serums, creams and topical treatments but without a good, healthy diet your skin will show stress.

Here are the primary players when it comes to skin health:

Vitamin A – Necessary for the maintenance and repair of vital skin tissue, it is the key to healthy skin. If you are deficient in vitamin A your skin many take on a dry, flaky complexion. Vitamin supplements are good but also eat foods rich in A such as sweet potatoes, carrots and dark leafy vegetables. Research by the American Academy of Dermatology has show when used on the skin, products containing vitamin A can help control acne and reduce line and wrinkles.

Vitamin B Complex- Found in foods like oatmeal, rice, eggs and bananas. Vitamins B complex contains the nutrient biotin which forms the basis of nails, skin, and hair cells. Too little vitamin B complex in your diet can cause dermatitis and hair loss. Topical creams and ointments made with B vitamins can instantly hydrate cells and give a healthy glow to the skin. Using some creams containing vitamin B has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as evens out skin tone.

Vitamin C – Fill up on citrus fruits, leafy greens, bell peppers and cauliflower, all of which are full of the vital nutrient. Vitamin C has been known to fight colds and when used directly on the skin can help collagen production. Vitamin C can also help reduce wrinkles, improve skin texture and reduce photo damage.

Vitamin E – Use Vitamin E directly on the skin to help reduce the appearance of scars and rough, dry skin. To keep skin looking soft and supple try eating more nuts, olives and spinach, all of which are rich with E. These foods will not only improve your skin but will also add luster and strength to your hair. For stubborn scars try directly massaging with vitamin E oil once or twice a day to reduce its appearance.

Vitamin K – Used topically K will reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. It will also help with bruises. Creams, serums and lotions that contain vitamin K will help fade discolorations and will reduce fine lines and wrinkles. A diet filled with dark leafy greens will help keep you feeling great but vitamin K needs to be used topically to benefit the appearance of the skin.

Aside from diet regular exfoliation helps remove dead cells and gives the skin a nice glow. I personally get microdermabrasion 3 or 4 times a year. Plenty good sleep, fresh air and exercise to increase circulation and reduce stress will also keep us looking and feeling our best. And, of course a Life Lift Acupressure/Shiatsu Facial at the Healing Touch Center!
