The Associations of the Fire Element
Many people have asked me to post more associations of the Taoist five elements. Presently we are in the summer season which is the Fire element. In the Taoist 5 element model the fire element is the most yang of the 5 elements and yang represents phenomena in its most expanded state. It is easy to see why summer with its heat and long hours of day light corresponds to the qualities of fire. It is also a time when we have many social gatherings, go places and are out and about in the world. Our gardens are in full bloom, as one of my clients is fond of saying “Things are in chaotic abundance.” Energetically the world is at the peak of growth.
The gift of the fire element is generosity as we share our bounty with the world. It reminds me of when my son was very young and had a friend come over to play. We had a closet full of toys, I was touched by how joyfully my son showed and shared his treasures with his friend. I remembered how wonderful it feels to share what I treasure the most, to share what I have worked so hard to grow and create.
The fire element also corresponds to a time of the day, noon. It is our mid-life, perhaps the pinnacle of a project or our career. It’s a great place to be so it is easy to become attached to staying in that place. Parts of us can experience depression not understanding that the joy of our creations is in the creation not the objects. It is a co-creative process and perhaps what is in abundance in our world is hurtful and frightening so parts of us are disassociated from difficult people around us and retreating inward instead of reaching out. No matter, reach out to all the parts of ourselves from our heart, breathe and be present. Like the seasons all things will change in a beautiful cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth.
